Frequently Asked Questions
Coverage is Care
Below are answers to common questions about Medicaid renewal and the Coverage is Care initiative.
If you do not see your question listed here, you may be able to find help on the Resources or How to Renew Your Medicaid pages.
Medicaid Renewal Basics
Medicaid renewal is the process the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) uses to confirm that you still qualify for Medicaid coverage.
During renewal, MDHHS reviews your information to make sure you still meet eligibility requirements.
If you qualify, your Medicaid coverage will continue.
Most people renew their Medicaid coverage every 12 months, but some people may need to renew more frequently.
MDHHS will notify you when it is time to renew.
You may receive a letter, a message in MI Bridges, or a renewal packet in the mail.
MDHHS will contact you when your renewal is due. Watch for:
- Letters from MDHHS
- Messages in your MI Bridges account
- Renewal forms mailed to your address
It is important to keep your contact information updated so you do not miss renewal notices.
How to Renew & What You Need
You can update your contact information through MI Bridges, the State of Michigan's online benefits portal.
In MI Bridges you can:
- Update your address, phone number, or email
- Check your renewal date
- Upload requested documents
- Complete your Medicaid renewal
MDHHS may ask you to provide documents that verify your information.
Examples include:
- Proof of income (such as pay stubs)
- Identification
- Household information
- Bank statements (if requested)
- Other health insurance information
The exact documents requested may vary depending on your situation.
You can return your renewal in several ways:
- Online through MI Bridges
- By mail
- By fax
- In person at an MDHHS office
Always sign your forms and return them by the due date.

If you miss your renewal deadline, your Medicaid coverage may end.
If this happens, contact MDHHS as soon as possible. In some cases, you may still be able to provide the required information and have your case reviewed again.
If you are missing a document or need more time, contact your MDHHS specialist or local office before your due date. You may be able to request an extension.
Sometimes MDHHS may ask you to provide additional proof about your situation. You may receive something called a Verification Checklist. This means MDHHS needs more information before they can complete your renewal. Responding quickly can help prevent delays in your coverage.
If you receive a Verification Checklist, do not ignore it. Each item on the checklist is something MDHHS needs to verify your eligibility. Submitting your documents promptly gives MDHHS the information they need to process your renewal without unnecessary delays — helping you keep the coverage you depend on.
If MDHHS cannot reach you, you may miss:
- Renewal notices
- Requests for documents
- Instructions about how to complete your renewal
Missing these notices could cause delays or even result in your coverage ending.
Helpful Tip: If you recently moved or changed phone numbers, update your information in MI Bridges as soon as possible – even if you have not received a renewal notice yet.
If You Lose Coverage
If your Medicaid coverage ends, you may still have options for health insurance.
