Trinity Health Muskegon is excited to announce it has begun treating patients with a renal denervation procedure offered to those who struggle getting their high blood pressure under control. It’s the latest example of Trinity Health’s commitment to offering patients the best treatments available.

The Symplicity Spyral™ renal denervation (RDN) system involves a minimally invasive procedure that targets nerves near the kidneys that can become overactive and cause high blood pressure. The procedure is approved for use as a supplemental treatment when lifestyle changes and medications do not adequately control a patient’s blood pressure.

On March 12th, Varun Yelamanchili, MD and Doug Stewart, MD, interventional cardiologists at Trinity Health Medical Group, Cardiology – Muskegon, successfully performed the procedure on a male patient.

"This patient was an excellent candidate for renal denervation because his blood pressure remained consistently above 140/90 despite taking multiple antihypertensive medications,” said Dr. Yelamanchili. “Although he was very compliant with his treatment, the medications were causing side effects that affected his daily quality of life. We are encouraged by the opportunity to offer this therapy to patients, like him, who continue to struggle with hypertension despite doing everything right."

High blood pressure (or hypertension) is one of the largest contributors to death and impacts about 50% of adults in the U.S. Of those who are aware of their hypertension, about 80% do not have it under control.

Trinity Health Heart and Vascular Care experts are committed to bringing new procedures that will improve well-being and quality of life for people in our community. Renal denervation serves as a recent example.

Trinity Health Muskegon is proud to join Trinity Health Grand Rapids, which in July treated its first patient with this procedure.

Patients who would like to learn whether the Symplicity Spyral™ renal denervation procedure is right for them should speak with their primary care physician for a referral.
