Venous Insufficiency

A woman and her grandmother stroll happily through a park

The expert vascular surgeons at Trinity Health Michigan are fully equipped to treat your venous insufficiency, working alongside you to restore proper blood flow.

What is Venous Insufficiency?

Venous insufficiency is a condition that makes it difficult for the veins in your legs to return blood to the heart. This condition can be caused by weakness in the vein walls or valves in your veins that don't function properly.

Symptoms

  • Dull aching
  • Itching
  • Pain while standing
  • Redness or swelling
  • Ulcers
  • Varicose veins

Diagnosis

Your doctor will do a physical exam and ask about your symptoms and medical history. Diagnosis is often made based on the appearance of leg veins when you're standing or sitting with your legs dangling.

An arterial duplex of your leg may be ordered to confirm a diagnosis.

Treatment

Treatment of venous insufficiency at Mercy Health begins with self-care steps, including standing often, losing weight and exercising regularly. In severe cases, your physician may suggest non-surgical procedures such as endovenous ablation or angioplasty and stents.
