Storage and Preparation

Store whole red cabbage in the fridge, keeping it in a loose plastic bag or crisper drawer. When ready to eat, remove the outer leaves, slice it up, and enjoy it raw in salads, stir-fried, roasted, or even pickled for a tasty twist!

Red Cabbage Recipes

Red Cabbage Salad with Apples and Walnut

Cooking Time: 20 min

Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients:

  • ½ medium red cabbage, shredded
  • 1 red onion, julienned
  • 1–2 medium apples, chopped
  • ¼ cup walnuts, chopped (optional)
  • ¼ cup golden raisins (optional)
  • 4 tablespoons apple cider vinegar or balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sugar 

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the ingredients by shredding the cabbage and chopping the onion, apples, and walnuts.
  2. In a large salad bowl, combine the cabbage, apples, and onion.
  3. Add the walnuts and raisins, then toss to mix them evenly.
  4. In a small jar with a lid, combine the vinegar, olive oil, salt, pepper, and sugar. Shake well until the dressing is emulsified.
  5. Pour the vinaigrette over the salad and toss until well coated. 

German Braised Red Cabbage

Cooking Time: 1 hr

Yield: 6 servings 

Ingredients:

  • ¾ cup water
  • 1 small head red cabbage, finely shredded
  • 3 apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
  • 1 cup distilled white vinegar
  • ¼ cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter, divided
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground allspice
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves 

Instructions:

  1. In a large saucepan over high heat, combine water, cabbage, apples, vinegar, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon of butter, cinnamon, allspice, and cloves.
  2. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for about 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender.
  3. Stir in the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter before serving.
