Mental Health Awareness and Training (MHAT)

Free Mental Health Training Programs in Chelsea, Michigan

Chelsea Hospital received the Mental Health Awareness and Training (MHAT) Grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in September 2021. This five-year grant provides free, evidence-based mental health training designed to help individuals recognize mental health challenges, respond effectively in times of crisis, and connect people to local resources. 

Through MHAT, community members gain practical skills to support friends, family members, coworkers, students, and others experiencing mental health or substance use concerns. Resource guides are also available to help individuals access mental health services throughout the community.

Question. Persuade. Refer. (QPR) Suicide Prevention Training

QPR is a suicide prevention training program that teaches participants how to recognize the warning signs of suicide and respond with confidence. Similar to CPR for physical emergencies, QPR provides simple, actionable steps that can help save lives.

  • Self-paced online option can be completed at your convenience

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) for Adults

Mental Health First Aid teaches adults how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges in other adults.

  • 2 hours of self-paced online learning
  • 5 to 6 hours of instructor-led training

  • 5 to 6 hours of instructor-led training

Teen Mental Health First Aid (tMHFA)

Teen Mental Health First Aid empowers students to recognize mental health challenges in themselves and their peers and safely connect one another with trusted adult support.

Training Details

  • Approximately 4.5 hours
  • Designed for students in grades 10-12
  • Appropriate for youth ages 15-18

  • Common mental health and substance use challenges
  • The impacts of bullying and social media
  • How to start conversations about mental health
  • When and how to seek help from a trusted adult
  • Ways to support peers experiencing difficulties

Important Requirement

Teen Mental Health First Aid must be delivered to an established group of students, such as:

  • Grade-level cohorts
  • Scout troops
  • Consortium classes
  • Youth groups
  • Other existing student organizations
