A sweet and juicy summertime favorite, especially in Michigan!

Season: July - September

Storage and Preparation

Blueberries can be eaten fresh, baked, frozen, and dried. They can be served as a side dish to any meal or baked into a recipe of your choosing. Rinse under cool running water before eating or preparing for a dish. For longer-term storage, do not rinse until ready to use and place in a breathable container in the refrigerator. Keep away from raw meat products to avoid the risk of cross contamination.

Nutrition

Blueberries are a great source of antioxidants that can protect the body from inflammatory damage. They can satisfy a sweet tooth without spiking blood sugar levels due to the high fiber content. Try adding blueberries as a snack or dessert option!

Blueberry Recipes

Blueberry Crumble

Ingredients:

Blueberry Filling

  • 1 ½ lbs (2 pints) blueberries
  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • 2 Tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice or water
  • Pinch fine sea salt

Crumble Topping

  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup butter
  • 1/8 tsp fine sea salt

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  2. Add the blueberries, lemon juice, 2 Tbsp flour, 2 Tbsp sugar, and a pinch of salt to a baking pan. Toss well until combined.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, ½ cup of sugar, and 1/8 tsp of salt. Add the melted butter, then stir until the butter has moistened all the flour and the topping is crumbly.
  4. Sprinkle the crumble topping over the blueberry filling. I use my hands to do this. As I sprinkle, I press the crumbles together to create larger clumps of topping.
  5. Bake until the juices thicken, and the topping turns light golden brown, 25 to 35 minutes. Cool for 10 minutes and then serve.

Sweet and Savory Blueberry Galette

Egg Wash

  • 1 beaten egg
  • 1 Tbsp water

Instructions:

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the blueberry filling ingredients.
  2. Let your premade pie crusts come to room temperature. Add your filling to the middle of the pie crust and fold your pie crust over on the edges, creating pleats.
  3. Brush with the egg wash and bake at 375°F for 20-25 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the inside is juicy. Remove from the oven and add crumbled goat cheese. Bake for 10 minutes.
  4. Remove and let cool for 10 minutes. Add fresh rosemary and a drizzle of honey.
