My why! Luke Sprague, RRT, shares his passion for care

Luke Sprague, RRT, shares why he chose to work for Trinity Health Grand Rapids more than 20 years ago, and how it fuels his passion to care for others.
“I've been a respiratory therapist for 23 years,” said Luke. “I've worked for Trinity Health Grand Rapids for almost 21 years. Trinity Health helps me fulfill my passion by giving me a voice in the care we 
provide to our patients. The respect I get as a professional here is second to none.”
As a respiratory therapist, Luke’s role is expansive. His days can be filled with caring for patients by offering simple nebulizer treatments to people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease; and managing patients on ventilators in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Emergency Room.
“I also care for the smallest of patients in our neonatal ICU,” said Luke. “I'm a part of the most critical situations in the hospital. With every CODE and rapid response, I'm at the head of the bed maintaining the patient's airway and breathing.”
Two of Trinity Health Grand Rapids’ core values are integrity and reverence. Not only are patients treated with integrity and reverence, but so are the colleagues.
“The leadership at Trinity Health Grand Rapids is a big reason I've chosen to work here for as long as I have,” said Luke. “Open, honest communication and empowering me to help shape this department into what it is today has made me feel like I'm an integral piece of it. I enjoy working here because I'm not just a number — I'm a respected member of the team. People value my opinion and I'm very much a part of the decision-making process for patient care.”
Luke’s intense, life-saving role requires physical and emotional energy. He stays at his best at work by re-energizing in nature and spending time with his family watching his sons play sports. Luke is an avid hunter and fisherman — sometimes in a kayak!
“I would definitely recommend working for Trinity Health Grand Rapids — especially the Respiratory Department,” said Luke. “Being able to use my skills in a very comprehensive setting, sets us apart from the rest.”
