Back In Rhythm: Pulsed Field Ablation Brings Renewed Hope for AFib Patients

Trinity Health Oakland has brought the latest advancement to its comprehensive cardiovascular program: the introduction of Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) therapy for the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AFib).
What are PFA & AFib?
PFA is a breakthrough in AFib treatment, using high-voltage electrical pulses instead of heat or cold to precisely target heart tissue. This non-thermal approach reduces risk of damage to surrounding structures making the procedure safer, faster, and just as effective at restoring normal heart rhythm.
AFib is a common heart rhythm disorder that impacts roughly five million Americans or roughly 5% of the adult population in the United States. It can lead to serious complications if left untreated. Symptoms may include an irregular or rapid heartbeat, fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, or chest discomfort.
“The introduction of this technology demonstrates our commitment to patients living with AFib and the investments we are making to bring impactful medical innovations to our hospital,” said Fabian Fregoli, chief medical officer and president of Trinity Health Oakland. “It reflects our dedication to expanding the capabilities of our cardiovascular program and ensuring patients have access to the safest, most effective treatments available. I’m proud of our physicians and medical teams for forging the future of heart care here in Oakland County.”
Leaders in PFA at Trinity Health Oakland
One of the physicians leading the effort is Aaref Badshah, M.D., an electrophysiologist on staff at Trinity Health Oakland.
“This is an important leap forward that reflects our hospital’s commitment to being a leading, patient-centered heart center,” said Dr. Badshah. “When I sit down with a patient and explain their options, having this new tool in the toolbox means I can offer a safer, more personalized, and effective treatment plan.”
Dr. Badshah began treating patients with PFA in the fall of 2025 alongside Rajiv Nair, M.D., F.A.C.C., medical director of the Cardiac Electrophysiology Lab at Trinity Health Oakland. Dr. Nair and Dr. Badshah were among the clinical leaders to advocate for acquisition of the technology.
What's Next for Treatment
“Pulsed Field Ablation represents a transformative step in electrophysiology,” said Dr. Nair. “This technology elevates our ability to treat complex arrhythmias with greater precision and safety. It is empowering us to offer patients and their families a greater sense of hope and confidence, while driving forward the future of heart care.”
PFA technology is part of Trinity Health Michigan’s continued investment in next-generation electrophysiology tools, ensuring patients have access to the most advanced therapies available. Trinity Health Oakland joins its sister hospitals in Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, and Muskegon in offering it to patients.
“I agree this technology represents an exciting advancement in AFib care,” said Alexander Turin, M.D., an electrophysiologist with Trinity Health Medical Group Cardiology, serving communities in Muskegon and Grand Rapids. “My team and I began using PFA this past fall and already we are seeing a noticeable elevation in results for our patients.”
Risk Factors
Risk factors for AFib range from high blood pressure and sleep apnea to advanced age and a family history. If you suspect AFib, early diagnosis and treatment are critical to improving your health.
