This cozy apple crumble is naturally sweetened with applesauce and maple sugar, making it a wholesome dessert with warm fall flavors and a satisfying oat topping.

Prep Time: 20 mins
Bake Time: 40–45 mins
Total Time: 1 hr
Servings: 6

Ingredients

  • ½ cup regular rolled oats
  • 2 tablespoons whole-wheat pastry flour
  • 2 tablespoons maple sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon cold butter, cut into small pieces
  • 3 medium Golden Delicious apples, cored and cut into thin wedges
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened applesauce
  • Optional: 1 (8 oz) container low-fat vanilla yogurt or non-dairy alternative for serving

Tips

  • For individual servings, divide the apple mixture among six, 6–8 oz ramekins.
  • Top with oat mixture and bake for about 35 minutes.
  • You can substitute coconut oil for butter to make it dairy-free.

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine oats, flour, maple sugar, and cinnamon. Mix with a fork until combined. Add butter and work it in with your fingers or a pastry blender until the mixture forms clumps.
  3. In a large bowl, toss apples with water, lemon juice, and applesauce. Transfer to a 9-inch pie plate.
  4. Sprinkle oat mixture evenly over the apples.
  5. Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until topping is golden and apples are tender.
  6. Serve warm, optionally topped with yogurt.
