Trinity Health Grand Rapids Treats First Patient in West Michigan with New, Minimally Invasive Technology to Help Control Blood Pressure
August 12, 2025Trinity Health Grand Rapids has successfully treated the first patient with a new renal denervation procedure, now offered to certain patients with high blood pressure.
The Symplicity Spyral™ renal denervation (RDN) system involves a minimally invasive procedure that targets nerves near the kidneys that can become overactive and cause high blood pressure. The procedure is approved for use as a supplemental treatment when lifestyle changes and medications do not adequately control a patient’s blood pressure.
On July 31 , Abiy Nigatu, MD, an interventional cardiologist with Trinity Health Medical Group Cardiology – Grand Rapids and Muskegon and a member of the Cardiovascular Network of West Michigan, successfully performed the procedure on a female patient.
“The procedure was right for this patient because she fulfilled the appropriate criteria, including being on multiple antihypertensive medications and still having difficulty controlling her blood pressure,” said Dr. Nigatu. “We are happy to say the patient is doing well and her prognosis is excellent.”
High blood pressure (or hypertension) is one of the largest contributors to death and impacts about 50% of adults in the U.S. Of those who are aware of their hypertension, about 80% do not have it under control.
“Bringing this new capability to our cardiovascular program is a testament to the dedication, skill, and pursuit of excellence in cardiovascular care,” said Kristine Todd, DNP, administrative director of the Cardiovascular Network of West Michigan and Trinity Health Grand Rapids Heart and Vascular, where the procedure was completed. “This advancement not only enhances our service offerings but also positions us at the forefront of emerging therapies aimed at improving patient outcomes.”
Patients who would like to learn if the Symplicity Spyral™ renal denervation procedure is right for them should speak to their primary care physician for a referral to Dr. Nigatu.
