Welcome from the Program Director

Program Director

Welcome to the Transitional Year/Wayne State University Program information page at Trinity Health Oakland. Our program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The objective of the THO Transitional Year is to provide a well-balanced program of graduate medical education in multiple clinical disciplines designed to facilitate the choice of and preparation for a specific specialty.

The Transitional Year (TY) residency is not a complete graduate education program in preparation for the practice of medicine. The Transitional Year is designed to fulfill the educational needs of medical school graduates who require a prerequisite year of fundamental clinical education in preparation for future medical training and endeavors.

The Internal Medicine residency program is the sponsoring program and houses all of the TY rotations. Opportunities are available for rotations in surgery, obstetrics/gynecology, emergency medicine, ambulatory medicine, radiology, anesthesiology and some affiliated subspecialties.

The Transitional Year faculty represents educators from numerous disciplines. The program teaching and assessment protocols align to the ACGME's six general competencies: patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems-based practice. We utilize New Innovations as the electronic provider for confidential evaluation and feedback system. Residents have the opportunity to improve their skills using data provided by robust 360° evaluations. The program strives to maintain an environment of academic scholarly excellence while balancing work needs in a high-quality patient care environment.

Program Mission Statement

Our mission is to train highly competent, successful and resilient physicians who will acquire all the skills needed to transition into their respective advanced residencies, and ultimately become board-certified physicians that serve a diverse patient population in our community.

Program Aims

We expect our residents to develop management, leadership, interpersonal and communication skills necessary for transition into their future residency programs, and develop personal traits, life skills and behaviors that provide time for reflection, personal development and well-being.

We also aim to enhance the joy of medicine education by nurturing wellness, resiliency, and quality of life in achieving work-life balance for our residents.
