Educational Program

THMI GME Banner

Residents are responsible for the total care of surgical patients by direct participation in preoperative evaluation, intraoperative care, decision‐making and postoperative management. These functions are performed under the direct supervision of attending faculty members.

Trinity Health Ann Arbor is a large, busy Level‐I Trauma Center with a predominance of blunt trauma. Patients with multiple injuries are admitted into the Critical Care Service and are managed by the general surgery residents under the supervision of the attending general surgeon. These patients frequently require neurological and orthopedic surgery and care. Patients remain in the Critical Care Service for varying lengths of time and have frequent interaction with neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery staff and residents where these problems are discussed and appropriately addressed.

Conferences:

The General Surgery teaching conferences are focused on providing educational opportunities to residents by combining literature with practical patient care. The conference starts off with grand rounds featuring speakers and discussions on topics of surgical interest followed by resident surgical faculty presentations. These sessions rotate on a weekly basis between colorectal, breast, endocrine, thoracic, bariatric, and pediatric surgery as well as a basic surgical science curriculum. This weekly teaching block is protected time for surgery residents during which they have no other clinical responsibilities.

Call Schedule:

The Trinity Health Ann Arbor General Surgery Residency is in full compliance with the ACGME duty hours guidelines. In‐house call averages one‐in‐four to one‐in‐six nights.
