Patient Assistance Liaison Volunteers
Become a Patient Assistance Liason Volunteer
Whether it is bringing a smile to someone who is sick, playing a game or keeping someone active, Patient Assistance Liaison (PAL) volunteers make a difference. PAL volunteers improve the hospital experience for patients 70 years or older through assistance and companionship.
PAL volunteers provide:
- Daily visits: volunteers socialize with patients to help prevent confusion and maintain cognitive functioning
- Therapeutic activities: volunteers engage patients in activities, such as board games and puzzles, to stimulate and maintain function
- Mobilization maintenance: volunteers provide daily companionship during walks and exercise activities
- Mealtime companionship: volunteers provide mealtime assistance and companionship
Hospice Elder Life Program (HELP)
The PAL program is based on the proven success of the Hospice Elder Life Program (HELP) at Yale University. It implements evidence-based strategies three times a day, seven days a week as a preventative measure to reduce delirium and instances of decline. Delirium, the sudden change in how someone thinks and acts, may occur because of medication changes, illness or an operation. With proper support, delirium can be prevented and treated.
