Modern Trauma Bays and Isolation Rooms Come Online at Trinity Health Oakland

Three more phases of the Trinity Health Oakland Emergency Department (ED) construction project are officially complete, marking an important step forward in strengthening emergency care for Oakland County communities.

The newly completed phases bring substantial clinical enhancements designed to improve patient safety, expand emergency response capacity, and better support care teams. The upgrades reflect Trinity Health Oakland’s continued investment in delivering high‑quality, compassionate, and efficient emergency care.

“This project ensures our hospital can provide high-quality emergency care for the community for generations to come,” said Fabian Fregoli, M.D., chief medical officer and president of Trinity Health Oakland. “We are constantly doing all we can to provide emergency care that is not only advanced and efficient, but also compassionate and reassuring for every patient we serve. This investment raises the standard for emergency care across our region.”

The last three phases of the project included newly constructed patient exam rooms and two state‑of‑the‑art isolation rooms equipped with advanced ventilation systems to help reduce the spread of airborne infectious diseases. Each isolation room features a private bathroom, upgraded finishes and sliding glass doors that enhance patient privacy while allowing clinicians to monitor patients more effectively.

The redesign also introduces a reconfigured nursing station with improved sightlines, bringing physicians, case managers, and care teams together in a more collaborative workspace. Modern flooring, lighting and wall protection enhance both safety and durability, while the integrated care model improves communication and streamlines clinical workflows, ultimately supporting better patient outcomes.

Another highlight of the newly constructed space is the three new trauma rooms that are designed to flex and accommodate up to five trauma cases simultaneously. This expanded capacity significantly strengthens the hospital’s ability to respond to multiple critical emergencies at once, including severe injuries, heart attacks, strokes and obstetric emergencies. The trauma rooms also offer improved proximity to CT and Radiology services, allowing interdisciplinary teams to deliver lifesaving care more quickly and efficiently.

“This expansion significantly strengthens our ability to manage high‑acuity and simultaneous emergencies,” said Rahul Mehta, M.D., chair of Emergency Medicine at Trinity Health Oakland. “Whether it’s trauma, stroke, cardiac emergencies or infectious diseases, these upgrades will ensure we are as prepared as possible to meet our community’s emergency needs around the clock.”

Construction will continue later this month with the launch of the next phase of the project, which includes a new and enhanced ambulance bay, a designated bypass lane for emergency vehicles, and a redesigned ED entrance. These improvements are intended to support faster, safer arrivals for patients requiring emergency care and to improve access to care.

The entire project is expected to be completed in late 2027. The ED remains fully operational and open to patients during the construction project.
