For many women, the path from screening to diagnosis and treatment can feel overwhelming. At Trinity Health Breast Center – Lakes Village in Norton Shores, patients receive timely, personalized care through a coordinated and compassionate approach.

From screening to diagnosis: what to expect

The journey often begins with a routine screening mammogram. If something abnormal is found, patients are called back for diagnostic imaging – typically a mammogram and/or ultrasound. Trinity Health Breast Centers provide same-day results whenever possible, and biopsies are scheduled quickly, often within days.

If a breast cancer diagnosis is confirmed, nurse navigators step in to explain pathology results and coordinate referrals to specialists, including breast surgeons, oncologists, genetics services and physical therapists. Treatment plans are reviewed by a multidisciplinary team to ensure each patient receives care tailored to their unique diagnosis.

Coordinated care every step of the way

Behind every diagnosis is a dedicated team. From technologists and nurses to radiologists and surgeons, each professional plays a vital role in supporting patients.

“Every person involved in the breast care team is dedicated to providing compassion and expertise throughout every step of the way,” said Casey Ayers, manager of the Trinity Health Breast Center – Lakes Village.

The Breast Center team includes:

  • Breast care coordinators – manage diagnostic orders and callbacks
  • Certified technologists and sonographers – perform high-quality breast imaging
  • Procedure nurses – assist with biopsies and communicate results
  • Nurse navigators – guide patients through diagnosis, treatment and survivorship
  • Genetics and high-risk clinic – manage advanced imaging and genetic testing
  • Radiologists – interpret imaging and perform biopsies
  • Boutique and lymphedema services – provide post-surgical garments and therapy
  • Surgical and oncology specialists – deliver individualized care using a collaborative team approach

“This seamless coordination and our dedicated team are the cornerstone of our success,” said Casey. “It ensures patients receive timely care and emotional support throughout their journey.”

Nurse navigators: the cornerstone of care

Nurse navigators are the heart of breast cancer care. They advocate for patients, provide clarity and offer comfort during a time of uncertainty.

“They help deliver pathology results, provide counseling, schedule referrals and connect patients with community resources,” Casey explains.

From diagnosis to survivorship, nurse navigators ensure no patient feels alone.

Our message: prioritize your health

Women are encouraged to schedule annual screenings.

“Getting a mammogram is safe and effective,” said Kristina Gaunt, MD, co-medical director of the Trinity Health Breast Center – Lakes Village. “We can diagnose breast cancer early and avoid aggressive treatment more often in patients who receive their annual screening, starting at age 40.”

Early detection saves lives. We offer high-quality care close to home, eliminating the need to travel and ensuring every woman in the community has access to excellence in breast health.
