The use of advanced robotic surgery technology has positively transformed the way we are able to treat patients at Chelsea Hospital. As a general surgeon, I’ve witnessed firsthand how this state-of-the-art technology has elevated the patient experience and surgical outcomes.
Robotic surgery involves the use of a system that translates a surgeon’s hand movements into precise micro-movements of small instruments. This allows for an exceptional level of control and dexterity, particularly in tight or complex anatomical areas. Compared to traditional surgery, the robotic approach is minimally invasive, meaning we make smaller incisions. This often results in less post-operation pain, a reduced need for pain medication, less blood loss, less scarring, and a faster recovery time.
At Chelsea Hospital, we’ve successfully utilized robotic surgery in a wide range of procedures, including hernia repairs, gallbladder removals, colon resections, bariatric surgeries, and even some gynecologic and urologic procedures. The versatility of this technology makes it a valuable tool across many specialties and makes it an option for several different types of patients.
Our recent acquisition of the da Vinci 5 system at Chelsea Hospital has only further advanced our surgical capabilities. This system offers improved imaging and a more ergonomic design for our surgeons, which translates into even greater efficiency and precision in the operating room. It also supports a more streamlined workflow, allowing us to perform more procedures with reduced wait times for our patients.
I personally use robotic-assisted techniques most commonly for hernia procedures. In complex hernia repairs, the robot allows me to meticulously separate tissues and place mesh with exceptional accuracy, reducing the risk of post-operative complications and the patient having to receive a follow-up procedure. Patients are frequently surprised at how quickly they are able to return to normal activities thanks to the reduced pain and faster healing that comes with smaller incisions.
Safety remains our top overall priority. Before each surgery, we conduct thorough evaluations to ensure the patient is an appropriate candidate for robotic surgery. Additionally, surgeons must complete extensive hands-on training and simulation work before using the system in live situations. Continuous education and peer collaboration help us stay aligned with best practices and the latest advancements in surgical care.
For patients considering robotic surgery, it's important to know this technology is both safe and effective for many common procedures. We take a personalized approach with every case, ensuring each patient receives personalized, high-quality care. Our commitment to innovation and patient-centered care is at the heart of everything we do here at Chelsea Hospital. Robotic surgery is just one of the ways we’re shaping the future of health care, one successful outcome at a time.
