Lisa McDowell is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Lifestyle Medicine Practitioner. She provides sports performance nutrition to the Detroit Red Wings and Team USA Olympic Hockey as a Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics with additional ISAK, culinary genomic and advanced Metabolic Efficiency Training accreditation. She has tremendous pride being part of a team that supports some of the best athletes in the world.

Lisa enjoys working with individuals who want to optimize health and sports performance through lifestyle choices. Why I chose this program/location for my training

I was looking for a residency program that combines strong academic training with exposure to a wide variety of patient populations, while also emphasizing the wellbeing of the residents. Trinity Health Grand Rapids truly stood out to me. The Hauenstein Center offers an exceptional learning environment, and the program’s commitment to serving the Grand Rapids region aligns closely with my own values.

During my interview, I felt genuinely welcomed by everyone I met, which reinforced my sense that this is a supportive and collaborative place to grow. Living in Grand Rapids would also allow me to stay close to my family while enjoying everything the city has to offer, from its vibrant urban life to the easy access to beaches, parks and outdoor activities.

I chose this program because of its well-organized structure and emphasis on physician well-being. During the interview process and at the closer look, I felt a sense of camaraderie among the faculty and residents. I knew at that point this program would provide me with a supportive environment that would facilitate my personal and professional growth.

Additionally, the location is very convenient, making trips home to Canada quite easy. I am excited about serving the community of Grand Rapids.

I have a broad range of interests and a willingness to embrace challenges. I enjoy staying fit through HIIT workouts, yoga/pilates, baking and reading. Once in a while, I like to keep up with the latest fashion trends and travel.

During my interview, I paid close attention to how the residents talked about each other and how they interacted with their faculty. There was something easy and natural about it. When residents spoke about their faculty, you could tell the relationship went beyond just teaching.

Watching how everyone interacted with each other made that even clearer. A program that builds that kind of culture, while also being deeply committed to training well-rounded physicians, is exactly where I want to grow.

I chose Emergency Medicine because every day is different and unexpected which I love. It also provides a great work/life balance. I chose Muskegon for my training because it really does have high volumes and varied pathologies which I got to witness as a base student.

I love that it is a four year program which allows for more EM experience and more sub-surgical specialty experience. The cherry on top is the amazing culture among the attending physicians and residents.

I enjoy spending time with my husband and our two cats and dog. Our favorite thing to do is go overlanding in our 4runner and explore the hidden gems of Michigan. I also enjoy indoor and outdoor climbing as well as sewing and crocheting.

I was drawn to Trinity Health Grand Rapids after experiencing an understanding and inclusive environment during interviews and socials. Seeing seniors from my medical school thrive there further reinforced my interest. As the pediatrics coordinator for the residency, I have a particular interest in the care of children and adolescents.

Why I chose to practice in Grand Rapids...

I was born and raised in Michigan, but had never spent any considerable time in Grand Rapids prior to arriving here for residency. Needless to say, I fell in love with the city during my time here and simply can't imagine being anywhere else. It is not only a great place to practice medicine, but also a great place to raise a family. The people are friendly, and there are plenty of opportunities for recreation and entertainment. Grand Rapids has it all!

After finishing my PA degree at Western Michigan University, I wanted to pursue more training on the western side of Michigan because I loved the landscape and the people. Coming from a small town in Wyoming, I fell in love with exquisite beaches and hikes that Michigan had to offer.

I had heard many wonderful things about Trinity Health's PA residency program so I decided to pursue more training at that location. Why I chose to practice in Grand Rapids...

Muskegon has a lot to offer, and it's fun to see the growth happening in the city. There is a significant need for neurologic care along the Lakeshore (especially in stroke), and I'm excited to help fill the gap. It's also great to see the large variety of neurologic pathologies both inpatient and outpatient – no two days are the same! The easy beach access along Lake Michigan is an added bonus.

Current Activities, Research, Subspecialty or Professional Interests

As the Associate Program Director for the Neurology Residency Program, Dr. Antonio developed the Resiliency and Humanism Curriculum that secured first place at the 2023 AAN Brainstorm and was showcased at the 2024 AAN Thrive webinar. Dr. Antonio integrates DEI principles into the residency program and leads grant-funded quality improvements projects, such as stroke and sleep apnea education for the Asian American and LatinX communities. 

She received the Mercy Health Saint Mary's Neurology Residency Program 2022 Excellence in Teaching Award and the 2023 A.B. Baker Teaching Recognition Award from the American Academy of Neurology, and she also participated in the 2023 AAN Directors Mentorship Program. Dr. Antonio graduated from the 2022 AAN Emerging Leaders Program. She has contributed to the 2023 and 2024 AAN Wellness Hub and HeadTalks Workgroups, and is the Vice-Chair for the HeadTalks Workgroup for the upcoming 2025 Annual Meeting. Currently, she is the Chair of the Neuro-Ophthalmology and Neuro-Otology Section, having previously held the Vice Chair position from 2020 to 2022. 

She has been active member of the Emerging Leaders Subcommittee since 2023. In addition to her roles, Dr. Antonio dedicates time and energy to the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society (NANOS), where she serves as NANOS’ Alternate Delegate for the American Medical Association and as NANOS’ advisor to the AMA RVU Utility Committee. 

She is also on the Board of the West Michigan Asian American Association and plays a significant leadership role within her institution, sitting on the Board for the Trinity Health West Michigan Medical Group, serving as the Vice-Chair for the Trinity Health West Michigan Provider Engagement Committee, and acting as a Board Trustee for the Saint Mary’s Foundation. 

Dr. Antonio is deeply passionate about physician advocacy. She serves on the AAN Brain Political Action Committee (PAC) and is a graduate of the AAN’s Palatucci Advocacy and Leadership Forum (PALF), where she also acted as a faculty adviser. As an active Michigan Delegate at the Neurology on the Hill and Neurology Off the Hill, she has been the Michigan State Captain since 2021 for Neurology on the Hill. She has also participated in various county and state medical advocacy events.

Why I chose this program/location for my training

I chose Emergency Medicine for the broad scope of practice and the newer-ending opportunity to learn/see something new. I wanted to practice in a specialty that kept me on my toes every day. I chose Muskegon because I felt that it offered the most in those areas as an unopposed residency; pushing their residents to broaden their practice in a positive and supportive work environment.

Hobbies/interests outside of work

I enjoy woodworking, leatherworking, walks in the woods, mountain biking, tennis, and spending time with family and friends.

Why I chose this program/location for my training

I chose the Trinity Health Grand Rapids Hospice and Palliative Medicine (HPM) program for my fellowship training as I felt I would get excellent foundational training in HPM, while also having the availability to have some more Neuro-focused exposure as well.

Hobbies/what I do outside of work

I love spending time with my husband and our two dogs and two cats. We enjoy spending time outside together and do lots of gardening (vegetables, ornamental and cut flowers.) My houseplant collection is continuously growing. I also love to bake, read (lots of audiobooks!) and have many artistic and crafty hobbies like watercolor, crochet and embroidery.

Why I chose this program/Grand Rapids for my training

I completed my Family Medicine Residency training at GRMEP. I was very impressed with the program, and after being exposed to the Geriatrics team, I decided to continue my training in Grand Rapids. My wife and I couples matched for residency. After growing up in dense metro areas, Grand Rapids was the perfect combination of big city amenities and small town feel. On top of this, we immediately got along with our fellow GRMEP members and faculty. During our interviews here we immediately picked up on the positive work culture and wonderful people that make up GRMEP faculty and administration.

I completed my residency here in Grand Rapids, so I knew and loved the city. And I have always been impressed by my colleagues in palliative care who trained here. I know I will receive a great education and look forward to working with everyone.
