Trinity Health Oakland Completes First Phase of New $48 Million Emergency Department

PONTIAC, Mich. (July 28, 2025) – Trinity Health Oakland announced completion of phase one of its four-phase, $48 million Emergency Department construction, which broke ground in the summer of 2024. This initial phase added new patient bays, workflow-enhancing nursing stations, and an expanded employee locker room with private lockers, restrooms, and showers.

The Emergency Department, which is easily accessible on the hospital campus north of Square Lake Road along Woodward Avenue, will remain fully operational, 24/7, through the construction’s full completion in 2027.

“Construction is progressing smoothly, and although it's being completed in phases due to our ongoing operation as a fully functioning Emergency Department, the new space is already receiving high praise from our patients, nurses, and physicians,” said Rahul Mehta, chief of the Emergency Department at Trinity Health Oakland. “We are making this significant investment, the majority of which is donor funded, because the communities we serve deserve the best, most compassionate emergency care we can offer. This new space is empowering our medical team to deliver on that promise.”

Construction now moves to Phase Two, which includes the buildout of new corridors and trauma bays. This work will contribute to the doubling of the Emergency Department's size to more than 50,000 square feet, when complete, and will include new patient exam rooms. As one of Oakland County's leading Trauma Centers, the hospital has dedicated considerable time and energy to ensuring the new trauma space is state-of-the-art. Patients will have immediate access to a comprehensive range of resources, including trauma surgery, anesthesia, critical care, radiology, and other essential services. The hospital also provides comprehensive emergency care in cardiology and orthopedics, and is home to the nation's first Joint Commission-certified Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center, meaning it is officially recognized for its ability to perform life-saving clot removal procedures for stroke patients.

Additionally, as part of Phase Two, improvements to the ambulance entrance and triage area will help streamline patient transport for EMS personnel, leading to faster medical interventions and ultimately better outcomes for patients. The third and fourth phases of construction, which are expected to begin in 2026, will add a dedicated behavioral health unit and a space for pediatric-focused care.
