June 3, 2026
MUSKEGON, Mich. (June 3, 2025) – Trinity Health Muskegon is now offering the public a rare opportunity to view a volume of The Saint John’s Bible, the first completely handwritten and illuminated Bible commissioned by a Benedictine Abbey since the invention of the printing press. The Gospels and Acts volume was officially put on display Wednesday afternoon in a ceremony at Trinity Health Muskegon.
“The presence of The Saint John’s Bible contributes to bring a healing atmosphere to our hospital while providing spiritual support to patients, visitors, and staff,” said Patty McNeil, Mission Leader, Trinity Health Muskegon, Shelby and Grand Haven. “Whether appreciated as a piece of art or as an illuminated sacred text, The Saint John’s Bible has meaning and value for everyone.”
Wednesday’s ceremony included words of welcome, a brief payer, and a reflective experience of two different illuminations while also offering more background on The Saint John’s Bible.
The Saint John’s Bible was commissioned in 1998 by Saint John’s University and the monks of Saint John’s Abbey in Minnesota. Its goal is to inspire the spiritual imagination of people around the world by combining renowned visual artistry with a clear translation of the Bible that speaks to and illuminates the modern world. In a fast-paced healthcare environment, The Saint John’s Bible is a work of art and a work of theology. It honors our Catholic identity by bridging the gap between ancient tradition and modern life and invites us to pause.
Trinity Health owns a copy of the seven St. John’s Heritage Bibles, and it travels around to different Trinity Health locations throughout the country. There are only two official heritage copies in Michigan: one is owned by Trinity Health and the other is owned by the University of Michigan.
