PONTIAC, Mich. (Jan. 30, 2018) — St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) has named Fabian Fregoli, M.D. as the hospital's new chief medical officer, effective January 1, 2018. In his new role, Dr. Fregoli oversees administration for medical staff, graduate medical education, patient safety, clinical quality, accreditation, care management and other services.
Dr. Fregoli succeeds Michael K. Smith, D.O., SJMO's chief medical officer since 2012, who chose to step down and serve as executive consultant to the president. As an advisor, Dr. Smith will continue to serve as a member of the hospital's senior leadership team.
"Dr. Fregoli has been a long-time champion within the hospital for enhanced quality, clinical care, patient safety and satisfaction, and will be a tremendous resource as we continue to elevate standards of care," said Shannon Striebich, president of St. Joseph Mercy Oakland. "At the same time, we are tremendously grateful for Dr. Smith's service and for his continued leadership within our organization. He has led the medical staff through a period of rapid growth and achievement, from the opening of the hospital's new
South Patient Tower to our most recent recognition as a Top Teaching Hospital by The Leapfrog Group."
Dr. Fregoli was in private practice as a family physician until 2007, when he joined SJMO. He is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and continues to see patients today on a part-time basis. Most recently, Dr. Fregoli held dual roles as vice president of quality and patient safety at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland and chief medical informatics officer of both SJMO and St.
Mary Mercy Livonia, two hospitals within Saint Joseph Mercy Health System.
In addition to his focus on clinical quality and patient safety, Dr. Fregoli is a clinical assistant professor at Wayne State University School of Medicine and the Michigan State University School of Medicine in the Department of Family Medicine. He completed his residency in Family Medicine at William Beaumont Hospital-Grosse Pointe, having served as chief resident during his final year.
