New Ablation Procedure to Treat Atrial Fibrillation Introduced at Trinity Health Ann Arbor
May 12, 2025
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (May 12, 2025) – Trinity Health Ann Arbor today announced the successful completion of the state of Michigan’s first ever atrial fibrillation (AFib) ablation procedure using a new advanced pulsed field ablation technology.
The new capability offers electrophysiologists at Trinity Health Ann Arbor the ability to correct irregular heartbeats. Using pulsed field ablation, this advancement precisely targets and controls the creation of cardiac scars, guided by real-time three-dimensional mapping, blocking the faulty electrical signals that cause AFib. This seamless integration of capabilities reduces the need for X-ray-based fluoroscopy, thereby lowering health care costs and minimizing patient radiation exposure.
“If you think of electrophysiologists as the electricians of the heart, what this advancement allows for is a real-time scan of the heart's structure and the ability to send short, targeted bursts of electrical energy to interrupt faulty electrical signals in problem areas with greater safety and precision for our patients,” said Mohammad-Ali Jazayeri, M.D., an electrophysiologist at Trinity Health Michigan Heart - Ann Arbor Campus. “The potential for our patients is significant. We can deliver a safer and potentially more effective long-term solution, while also reducing procedure times — including the time spent under anesthesia — and recovery times. Ultimately, and most importantly, we can deliver better outcomes for our patients.”
Trinity Health Ann Arbor is home to one of Michigan’s largest arrhythmia treatment centers. Trained and experienced electrophysiologists care for thousands of patients each year, working in coordination with a team of cardiologists, imaging specialists, and heart surgeons. Their combined expertise enables the successful treatment of even the most complex arrhythmias.
“To have the expertise, resources, and technology available to treat patients’ most complex heart arrhythmias, it’s a very comforting feeling knowing we are among the most elite and capable centers in America,” said Jihn D. Han, MD, Medical Director of the Electrophysiology Lab at Trinity Health Ann Arbor. “The adoption and integration of this technology into our Electrophysiology Lab allows us to take on the most challenging cases, all with greater precision and confidence.”
