For many moms, having a baby is one of the most memorable and emotional experiences – and can be filled with both joy and concerns. Led by caring OBGYN providers with decades of experience, the maternity care team at Trinity Health Oakland welcomes nearly 2,000 babies every year with a strong emphasis on safety and personalized support every step of the way. That culture of support and care has been trusted by thousands of parents.

“Here, you’re not just a number,” said Dr. Julie Masters, an OB/GYN with Trinity Health IHA Medical Group. “We cultivate relationships. It’s intimate, it’s spiritual and it’s home.”

The birth center is a place where both patients and staff can feel at home, with care for all pregnancy types, from low-risk pregnancies to those requiring complex, specialized care.

When Dr. Masters joined the medical staff nearly 25 years ago, she was drawn to Trinity Health Oakland for its full spectrum of specialties and the opportunity to practice high-risk medicine. “I received offers to practice from many low-risk centers,” she recalled, “but I wanted to use my skills where they mattered most, and I wanted my patients to have the resources and support if they needed it.”

“We always hope for a straightforward, predictable birth experience—but our medical team is prepared if or when additional care is needed,” Dr. Masters said. “This includes Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists, who support high-risk pregnancies, and our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which provides advanced care for newborns who need extra medical attention following delivery.”

Dr. Masters has a deeply spiritual approach to care, shaped by a serious injury and recovery she experienced as a young gymnast and later discovering her calling while job shadowing her own OB/GYN. “Seeing a baby brought into the world and the role that a physician and care team can have—it was spiritual,” Dr. Masters said. “From the very first birth I witnessed, I knew God was telling me what I should do with my life.”

Dr. Paul Corsi, the director of Gynecologic Robotic Surgery at Trinity Health Oakland, and a practicing OB/GYN for more than 30 years, shares Dr. Masters’ dedication to putting patients first and providing safe, positive birth experiences. “We’re hands-on, patient-centered and data-driven,” he said. “Our outcomes speak for themselves. Far too often, physicians intervene too early and create complications for expecting mothers when the safest thing to do is to allow for nature to take its course.”

Under the leadership of veteran providers like Drs. Corsi and Masters, Trinity Health Oakland has achieved one of the lowest C-section rates in Michigan, thanks to evidence-based labor management and prenatal education. In fact, less than 23.9% of first-time, low-risk pregnancies at full term were delivered by Cesarean section at Trinity Health Oakland, placing it among the top-performing hospitals in Michigan for maternity care.

Supportive care doesn’t end with labor and delivery. Certified lactation specialists provide onsite breastfeeding support and moms are encouraged to attend a free breastfeeding support group on the hospital’s campus. Additionally, Trinity Health’s partnership with nationally renowned C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital has elevated post-delivery care for children, ensuring seamless care from infancy, early childhood and beyond. With trusted clinical support for both moms and babies, parents can focus on the special parts of welcoming a new baby.

“Having a baby is a special life event, and we are here to honor the sacredness of this moment, but it’s also a medical event, and it’s our responsibility to ensure both mom and baby are as healthy as possible,” Dr. Masters said. “With the resources and expertise available in the hospital, Trinity Health Oakland is one of the safest places for a mom and her newborn, and that’s why I choose to deliver my patients here, and why I chose to deliver my own children here as well.”

Both Trinity Health Oakland and Trinity Health Grand Rapids were named to the list of 2025 High Performing Hospitals for Maternity Care by U.S. News & World Report, the global authority in hospital rankings and consumer advice. This is the highest award a hospital can earn as part of U.S. News’ annual study, which evaluates hospitals based on objective measures such as C-section rates in lower-risk pregnancies, severe unexpected newborn complication rates, exclusive breast milk feeding rates, birthing-friendly practices and transparency on racial/ethnic disparities.
