As summer dies down and the school season quickly approaches, now is the perfect time for parents to start thinking about how to best prepare their children for a healthy, successful school year.

As a pediatrician for Trinity Health IHA Medical Group, I often see how the transition of kids going back to school can impact their physical and mental health. To help ensure a smooth start to the school year and set their children up for success, here are some tips and strategies parents should take.

Reestablish Routines

One of the most effective ways to prepare your child for school is to reestablish consistent routines. This includes wake-up times and bedtimes, eating meals at the same time each day, and setting time aside each night for schoolwork. Setting a schedule and being consistent with it is a great place to start.

Nutrition and Sleep

A balanced diet is essential for any child’s health and academic performance. Each day should begin with a nutritious breakfast that includes foods with protein, like peanut butter and toast, for example. A good lunch and dinner would include a healthy mix of lean proteins, whole grains, and plenty of fruit and vegetables. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated!

Children need different hours of sleep depending on their age, but regardless of the specific number, quality sleep is incredibly important. Poor sleep can affect mood, cognitive function, and one’s overall health, so make sure your child’s sleep environment is one that makes it easy to sleep. Also, consider limiting screen time before bed, as the blue light from electronic devices can interfere with the production of melatonin, the hormone responsible for sleep.

Schedule Check-Ups

Before school begins, it’s a good idea to schedule a comprehensive check-up with a pediatrician. This visit allows us to ensure your child is up to date on all necessary vaccinations, address any health issues they may have, and perform routine screenings. And if your child plays a fall sport, this would also be the time to have their routine physical performed prior to performing in any athletic events.

Mental and Emotional Health

Returning to school can be a source of anxiety for some children. Parents should encourage open conversations about their child’s feelings and reassure them it’s normal to feel the way they do. Saving some time each day for relaxation and hobbies can also help ease your child’s mind of any anxiety they may have about going back to school.

Physical Activity

Regular exercise is vital for overall health and can also help manage stress and improve concentration. Encourage your child to participate in activities they enjoy, whether it’s sports, dance, or just being outdoors. Incorporating physical activity each day supports both physical and mental well-being.

Hand Hygiene

With the start of school comes the need to emphasize good hand hygiene. Children should be reminded to wash their hands frequently with soap and water for roughly 30 seconds, especially before eating and after using the restroom. Keeping hand sanitizer handy can also help, especially during the winter months when the common cold and flu are more prevalent.

Be Supportive

Last but certainly not least, helping your child develop a positive attitude towards school can significantly impact their overall experience. Being involved in your child's life plays a crucial role in their development, so be sure to take the time to check in with them, ask them questions about their day, and be there for them if they are having a hard time adjusting.

By taking these steps, you can help your child start the school year on the right foot. A little preparation goes a long way in fostering a successful, enjoyable school year for both parents and their children.
