Rotations

Rotations

Emergency Department Rotation

Two weeks that can include afternoon, evenings or weekends in order to have the largest amount of experience. The purpose of this rotation is to learn physical evaluation of patients coming in with a chief complaint. The Emergency Department is very busy and residents have an opportunity to do procedures under the direction of an ED Physician such as suturing minor wounds.

Anesthesia Rotation

2 weeks that consists of venipuncture opportunities, patient monitoring in the operating room, and intubation of patients undergoing general anesthesia. Supervised by one of the anesthesiologists at the hospital, the resident will have a chance to learn pre-operative assessment, pharmacology, monitoring and complications that can happen during anesthesia.

Internal Medicine Rotation

The residents are assigned to one of the “teams” that covers the floors on the Internal Medicine service. Dental residents will participate in the didactic portion of the Internal Medicine service including conferences and rounds while they are on this rotation.

General Pathology Rotation

The residents will spend time in each of the areas that make up the important part of the hospital laboratory. These include anatomic pathology, blood bank, microbiology, hematology, and clinical chemistry. This will provide the necessary background to understand the clinical importance of these tests.

Pediatrics Rotation

In order to better understand the health of children, there are several different experiences in the two week rotation in Pediatrics. Time will be spent in a Pediatric office to see what outpatient examination and treatment is like. That will be followed by observing on the Pediatric inpatient floor to work with children who are ill enough to require hospitalization.

Surgery Rotation

These two weeks allow the resident to work with any surgeon and see surgeries beyond oral surgery. This will include rounding with surgery residents, attending conferences and didactic classes while on rotation and assisting with general and specialty surgeons in the operating room.
